The need for a deeper understanding of the fundamental interactions between admixtures and the other components of concrete mixes is therefore increasing if technical and economic advantage is to be taken of the opportunities now available.
Its terms of reference are to prepare a guide for the use of admixtures for concrete, which will be a state-of-the-art Report on the application of technology with special reference to the different types, brands and specifications of admixtures for concrete.
This work is approaching completion at the time of writing.
The contributions to the Symposium, and the topics discussed highlight the main current areas of technical development. Six main themes were selected for the Symposium: workability; setting; strength; durability; other properties; technology.
These have attracted 50 papers covering many innovative topics as well as some which have been the subject of research and development for some time. For example, the combination of superplasticizing admixtures and silica fume is discussed in many papers, both for conventional and unusual applications of concrete.
Continuing concern over the durability of concrete is reflected in the papers dealing with air-entraining admixtures and with corrosion-inhibiting admixtures. We hope that the opportunity for exchange of information and ideas afforded by the Symposium and by these Proceedings will be of value to the concrete construction industry, and to all those who are involved in it.
